The Topping Out Ceremony for the Community Healthcare Center at Myanzi Church of Uganda - Mityana Diocese

Topping Out Ceremony Sunday, October 12

Dear friends,

We are planning a “TOPPING OUT” ceremony on Sunday October 12th at 3:00 p.m. Uganda time (which is 6:00 a.m. Mountain Time) at the COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE CENTER , MYANZI CHURCH OF UGANDA - MITYANA DIOCESE. A construction tradition is referred to as topping out, or raising the last beam of the most top level or the roof. Usually the success of reaching this milestone is celebrated by the gatherings of various people whose contribution is commemorated by members signing on the beam before it is raised. It then becomes part of the history of the building throughout its life.

In our case with the Community Healthcare Center facility, we have made a cross. On the day of the ceremony service, the apprentices and other people of the community will be present. All will sign in faith on that symbolized cross for the beam for reaching this milestone. This will become a historical monument of the facility. It will illustrate God’s - Jesus’s victory on the cross and his love for humanity as he conquered death and he was risen, which is a sure foundation of our faith.

Building Progress: From Wall Plates to Roofing Crews, Apprentices Lead the Way to Topping Out

Progress Report after a Month of Work

Dear friends,

The work started with mobilization of different crews of apprentices, who had taken a break doing their own personal business after they reached a milestone of getting to the wall plates this past March 2025.

During the last week of August, we started delivering materials on site and these included, truckloads of sand for plastering, steel tubes for roof trusses door frames and windows, trucks of timber.

It's been a process for all this past time to date, as we had to fabricate and assemble all our components from scratch to finished items.

Safety culture had to be rigorously revised right away for such a tight site, to let every activity proceed without incidents or accidents. Overhead work has been the potential hazard but so far so good we are doing well.

One of the plastering crew headed by Mr David Shaka has done such an incredible job installing windows and exterior plastering.

Mr Issa Nsubuga headed the fabrication of windows and doors which quite to good quality.

The roofing crew has very interesting and talented apprentices who have put on a quality output which made to district inspector shake his head in satisfaction of work. These apprentices are 21year old Frank Baale, 23 year old Willy Mutebi, 19 year old Okello from northern Uganda, and the head boss Mr Deo Nyanzi. The installation of the roofing sheets will be headed by Mr Alex Ntwatwa.

More updates are on the way as we make more progress and soon getting closer to the Topping out ceremony. We thank you for your support and prayers.

Building Progress and Community Impact: A New Year of Growth and Gratitude

As we step into a hopeful new year at Teach Men to Fish, our apprentices have shown remarkable dedication and hard work. With the Christmas festivities behind us and the rains giving us a brief respite, they have diligently continued with the critical tasks of framing and shoring up the deck of our ongoing construction project.

Thanks to the unwavering support of our local vendors, building materials have been arriving consistently, keeping our momentum high. We're thrilled to report that almost half of the deck is now prepped and ready for the next phases—roughing in the electrical and plumbing work.

Today marked another significant milestone with the delivery of concrete bags and reinforced rebar, setting us up perfectly to begin pouring the second floor concrete slab. These materials are not just the backbone of our structure; they symbolize the strength and resilience of our community coming together to support this cause.

During a recent visit to the maternity facility at Naama Mityana, I was greeted with warmth and profound gratitude. The head of the facility shared touching stories of how our contributions have dramatically improved the lives of mothers in the community. It's a vivid reminder of why we do what we do.

Each day brings us closer to our goal, fueled by the hard work of our apprentices and the generous support of local vendors and donors. Their combined efforts are not just building structures but are also fortifying the foundation of our community for generations to come.

My daddy died when I was still young and remained single parent. My studies could not proceed since there was a struggle in affording school requirements. I stopped in primary four and started looking for jobs so that can help mum and my young sisters to afford home needs. Dr John R Moore, Consultant Paediatrician, Leicester, United Kingdom. 1937 - 2013

The Sycamore Trust set up by Dr John and Helen Moore is very pleased to be able to support Teach Men to Fish to enable Patrick Latulo to build the new Outpatient Surgical Facility.

In 1980 he visited Uganda for the first time as part of a team of doctors helping in Kampala setting up the Makerere University medical school and was teaching students. He then returned twice more over the next 10 years helping the students pass their exams, as well as arranging training visits for the Ugandan doctors to visit the UK to gain valuable skills.

After retirement in 1997 he went back to Uganda most years for several weeks until 2007. He worked in Mityana, Jinja and community clinics teaching and supporting the local medical teams.

Patrick’s good friend Chris Moore (the son of John and Helen) and his sisters continue the generosity of their parents through the Sycamore Trust. Their ongoing support has significantly contributed to the completion of Phase 2 and readiness for Phase 3

Early Weather Challenge

I just wanted to remind myself of one of the biggest rainstorm challenges we faced at the very beginning of this project. All the column pad trenches got flooded and we had to empty everything by hand with buckets �� to get them dry and keep going. These young men and women endured the sticky mud on their boots, all of us getting wet and muddy. It just built our teamwork spirit strong and we did it. For in Proverbs 22:29 it says, skilled workers prepare and do the hard stuff first with a lot of endurances, but in the long run, gain a good reputation that is admired by many and brings God's glory to light.

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation before the Almighty for making that site meeting to happen. It opened up people’s hearts and commitment towards God’s great commission to serve his people in this part of the world and the Diocese in general as intended. On behalf of our organization and the young men and women of Namukozi Integrated Youth Development Group apprentices, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to all the participants and supporters in various ways that made this happen.

In his remarks, the Bishop’s representative and the new head leader of the Diocese Health concerns the Rev. Benon Tebasoboke made an assurance that they are in control of every pre-planning procedure to make sure everything comes to life to fulfill the intended vision and goals of the facility to usher in God’s glory. He further assured the meeting that they will be registering with Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau and constitute the governing board for the facility.

In his remarks after having toured the site and familiarized himself with what is on the ground, the Dean of Health Department UCU Dr. Gerald Tumusiime, appreciated the work being done for the community and the country towards providing quality health services that are accessible in rural areas like this one. He said, “ We are privileged to be part of this Project.”

In her remarks, lady UCU Lecturer in the Faculty of Public Health, Nursing, and Midwifery Elizabeth Namukombe, said, “ It was such a great time meeting you and your team of apprentices and tapping into the vision you have for the Myanzi community and the Diocese at large.”

Present was the IT technician Mr.Graham Turinawe , who promised to work with us as far as putting the necessary infrastructure in place for the facility. In his remarks, he said, “Thank you for your exceptional dedication and generosity towards the project. This will have a significant impact on individuals who will benefit from the services. May your kindness and generosity of supporters continue to inspire others.”

Present also was the UCU laboratory technician Mr. Mark Obin, together with the rest of the team suggested relocating the X-Ray service to the extremely isolated corner of the building for the safety concerns of the public.

In general, the room signage will be redone at a later stage having gotten the data and prevailing health needs of communities, which will largely involve preventive health education and counseling. The operation area will be an enclosed shell for now which can be divided and arranged to fit the needs, with flexible use of medical curtain partitions.

It was also pointed out to the Diocese to consider providing dwelling rooms for resident service providers.

In closing, thank you once again for your obedience to God’s call for his people.

We are pleased to let you know of some important advances in our work here in Myanzi with the apprentices as we work on the Outpatient Clinic. As shown in the photos, we now have electricity and water available at our site.

I am also grateful to have had a meeting with some of the faculty of the School of Medicine at Uganda Christian University to share our plans for the Clinic and to get their input on potential collaborations in the future. The meeting was also attended by clergy from the Diocese of Mityana. On February 9 some of the Medical faculty will come to Myanzi to look over the project in order to gain a better understanding of possible ways we can collaborate.

We are so grateful to God for what the young men and women of Namukozi Integrated Youth Development Group have achieved so far in building the new Outpatient Surgical Center in Myanzi, Uganda. The apprentices have worked very hard and put to good use the many skills they have been developing. We are so proud of these apprentices who have been working on the Outpatient Surgical Center Project. With their advanced skills, members of the community are realizing how capable and confident they are and are calling on them to do similar projects that involve structural elements as you can see in the photo.

Our apprentices recently sent this update towards becoming independent. They were hired for a job for compaction of the subgrade by a resident member of the Mityana community. That puts money into their pockets and increases their confidence. Thank you so much for supporting these young people to acquire such skills.

MYANZI CHURCH OF UGANDA HOSPITAL FINAL STRUCTURE

In December 2022, we embarked on Phase 1 of a brand new project in Uganda, the Outpatient Surgical Center at Myanzi Church of Uganda in Mityana Diocese. This phase involved the following activities:

Orientation, training and building teamwork prior to commencement.
Mobilization of resources and likely vendors for the project.
Engaging with the community leaders and the local building authority.
Pre-planning for temporary requirements like sources water and lighting.
And finally, execution of the work itself.

The month of December in Uganda sometimes has its challenges with the rain. This time around was such a major problem during the excavation process as the machines were just getting stuck in the wet clay soils. However, come January, the sunshine broke through and we were able to do the groundbreaking on January 14 ^th , which was so fantastic for the apprentices to be fully involved in such a big project taking so much of their time.

They were just anxious and excited at every stage of the development of the project to make things come together from just a blueprint to reality.

We are so thankful to God for our vendors and suppliers who throughout the entire course of construction have kept us busy and on schedule to be able to accomplish our main goals of completing Phase One in just less than two months. We are now entering Phase 2 of the superstructure construction.

I would like to acknowledge the entire board of the Teach Men to Fish organization who have worked tirelessly for the success of this 1st phase.

Great appreciation goes out to all our supporters. Thank you, thank you so much.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to the young Architect for the project, Mr. Alex Saabwe, and the entire team of the young men and women of Namukozi Integrated Youth Development Group.

Thanksgiving Prayer

We were so humbled to have a Eucharistic Thanksgiving prayer service right on the site and the just finished concrete slab on grade for the Outpatient Surgical Center at Myanzi church of Uganda Mityana Diocese.

The service was performed by the Rev Livingston Kimbowa of Lubumba parish and was attended by several young students both in primary and secondary levels from the various parish churches around Myanzi.

The young people were so inspired by our apprentices to be able to execute such a noble job for the community. One of the church elders advised the young kids to start having a vision for the future now that such an important and much needed facility is just in their backyard. We acknowledged elders present and thanked them for the support for us in terms of food donations on site for apprentices. God's presence is just felt everywhere for the quality work we have achieved so far. That was a compliment from the elders.

Glory to God for spearheading this great commission for his people.

These photos were taken very recently on the site of the new surgical facility. Patrick and the apprentices are all working very hard getting the ground prepared, stocking up materials, doing layout, and getting started digging foundation pads and working with rebar.

The apprentices, family and community members, and members of the clergy will gather on January 14 to celebrate the Groundbreaking for the new Outpatient Surgical Center. This will be a time of dedicating the whole project to God for the benefit of the whole community.

After Shaka delivered the rebar for the foundation pads, the apprentices embarked on measuring, cutting and fabricating it according to the structural drawings requirements. The Makita cordless grinder made a big difference in speeding up the cutting process. Safety awareness of the hazards related to the process were observed by use of the safety glasses for everyone. The process will continue tomorrow as we have to cut and fabricate 900 pieces of rebar just for the square mats for the pads. Lots of work.

Yesterday I was on site for the first time and met with the elders and stewards of the church who are very grateful for what we will be doing for the communities in this region to have such a facility that will help so many.

Work for clearing and excavation is ready as soon we get the funds for the process. In fact, I was negotiating with the operator to get started today, while we wait for the money to arrive from the wire transfer requested a few days ago. The groundbreaking day is still scheduled for January 14 ^th , 2023.

Yesterday was another interesting day where we focused on the details of analyzing both the structural and architectural drawings. It was pretty much a one-on-one engagement with a lot of questions and thank God we had a blackboard and chalk where I could further clarify details for them in a way they are used to. We were also able to use a laptop for some illustrations.

The Orientation Day with all the apprentices was quite exciting as it was our first meeting after a long time.

We started with a Thanksgiving prayer for the good Lord to sustain everyone in the community with all the health concerns that are going on. We began with a brief introduction of what the project is about and reviewed the blueprints. They were all appreciative of its future impact on the communities. The discussion went on for about two hours and the skies opened up to a downpour. However, we will go deeper into the details tomorrow and anticipate a meeting with the Diocese Clergy.

Patrick Is Headed to Uganda Today!

Patrick leaves for Uganda on December 3, 2022. He will soon begin working with the apprentices on the first phase of the new project, an Outpatient Surgical Center. Several large pieces of equipment needed for the project (see photos) were recently purchased and apprentices are eagerly waiting for Patrick to come to show them how to operate the machinery. New apprentices will learn and practice basic skills that will be helpful on the new project.

Summer Apprenticeship Training Report - 2022

This is a report along with wonderful photos of the progress made by the new apprentices who recently started their training. The report was written by the instructor who was one of the first apprentices who received training. They have received this initial instruction in order to be more prepared when Patrick returns to Uganda in December to continue their training and begin work on the new construction project.

The maternity facility the apprentices completed earlier this year is in constant use by the community for prenatal visits and births. Recently three babies were born in the facility in one day!

Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status was recently granted to Teach Men to Fish by the Ugandan government. Becoming a “legal entity” will allow benefits such as sales tax relief when purchasing equipment and supplies as well as the possibility of more local financial support.

The two students enrolled in business administration courses at Uganda Christian University (UCU) recently began internships that are required for completion of their degrees. One student will be working at the Bank of Uganda in Kampala and one will be working at the municipality head offices in Mityana. We are very proud of both of them! One student, Muwonge Gideon Yudah, was recently elected to the position of Speaker in the UCU Business Student Society.

The new project that is planned for this year when Patrick goes back is a new two-story outpatient surgical center for people in the area surrounding the village of Myanzi. It will be a several year project. Groundbreaking will take place on January 14 with the Bishop of Mityana presiding.

Dear Friends,

We are excited to tell you about plans for the return to Uganda in December 2022. You will see an overview on the poster that we presented at the SAMS (Society of Senders and Missionaries) and New Wineskins conference at Ridgecrest in North Carolina September 19-23. As a Missionary Bridger with SAMS I was thrilled to see old friends and meet other missionaries from around the world. We are planning to begin Phase 1 of a new outpatient surgical center in Myanzi, Uganda. Groundbreaking for the Center will be on January 14 with the Bishop of Mityana Diocese presiding.

Apprentices will be working on the project for several months with Patrick while he is on site, and will continue with the oversight of previous apprentices, instruction and supervision by Patrick after he returns to the US. Please look over the details of plans for the facility and the estimate of costs for Phase One of the project. We value your prayerful consideration of assisting us with the expenses of this surgical center as it is a huge undertaking. This center will provide a much-needed resource for people in the community who may suffer or even die of injuries that could be easily treated if medical services were nearby. Come for a live update on the work of Teach Men to Fish!

Please join us for an in-person update from Patrick Lutalo on his work with the apprentices in Uganda! Patrick just returned the end of February and will show photos and talk about the remarkable work they accomplished in finishing the maternity facility in Naama. Even without plumbing and electricity (which have now been added), more than 222 children have been born in the facility since they started using it in 2020.

Today some of Shaka's group helped to build on a community spring well which people were stepping in to draw water and now they will be using the pipes which were installed when it fills up.

Always a Way

It was such an exciting day today for apprentices as we practiced dealing with doors for the first time.

We had a situation of the door being bigger than the opening after they took the measurements and I told them there's always a way to make it fit, of course they could not believe it right away.

So we had to cut it down to fit with a straight edge and the electric saw. Thanks to Saunders for the tools donation. Safety was priority since the procedure involved adjusting angles to make sure each time the power has to be unplugged to avoid any injuries.

Shaka's group is almost done practicing on stepped sloping ground. Some of the apprentices are practicing the procedures for preparation for terrazzo floors. Soon we will be practicing the preparation and swinging of doors. This will include checking rough openings to determine the sizes of doors which have to be cut on site to fit as most door frames and doors are not standard. We will look at safe practices of handling doors as they are always heavy especially when they are handling them for the first time. That will be interesting.

Training and Practice Starting Tomorrow

As we are getting in the final stages of closing off the Naama project, tomorrow we will be starting on the training and practice for the remaining before I leave Uganda, now that we have our smart TV. We will focus on structural elements and design considerations given the various topography and nature of soils. We will look at the nature of foundations. Looking forward to this as the apprentices advance in advanced areas of construction.

Dear Friends,

Here is another update on all the fabulous progress Patrick and the apprentices are making in Uganda.

In addition to the construction work you see in the photos, you can also get a glimpse of the attention that is given to creating a beautiful environment and to the comfort of those using the facility.

1/4 The ladies were busy with landscaping and planting flowers.

1/4 Here is one of the planters at the front of the building.

1/6 I was able to purchase two delivery beds and a new bassinet to replace some of the well-worn equipment in the maternity facility.

1/6 The apprentices made remarkable progress in a short time. This year the weather has cooperated and we haven’t experienced the drenching rains of two years ago. Apprentices did the form work for the lower ring beam and crossbeam. They also fabricated the rebar and poured concrete.

1/10 Today the apprentices worked hard on the interior plastering of the underground water storage tank. They are getting better and better at finishing. I’m so proud of them for their confidence in what they do.

1/11 The plastering was finished; the scaffolding can still be seen.

1/13 We’re making progress and can see the “light at the end of the tunnel.”

1/14 Rebar and finishing parts of the underground water storage tank were completed.

1/14 The apprentices did some tremendous work of pouring an 8 inch reinforced concrete slab for the underground water storage tank. Bless their hearts.

Mr. Mark Nelson Ssebambulidde recently conducted a microfinance seminar with the apprentices at their patron's residence Mr. Edward Semiti. His emphasis was directed towards identifying what individuals were passionate about doing, records keeping and savings in the bank, not under the pillow. Apprentices were given opportunities to ask questions, as many had little knowledge of the business laws that are involved in running a small business. They are given an open opportunity to consult for advice as they move forward for next year.

big construction job

The apprentices were recently hired for a big construction job! You can see them making concrete blocks with the “blue machine” which was donated by the Men’s Group at Christ Church in Denver. And what a lot of blocks they’ve been turning out—perhaps even making some to sell to others! The wall is certainly well built by this crew of apprentices and their two mentors. Congratulations on getting the job!! God bless them as they use the skills they were taught by Patrick in the Teach Men to Fish program!

Recently the apprentices have been making masks and putting together bags of food to give to those most vulnerable in the community.

Please join me in appreciating our Namukozi Integrated Youth Development Group for their spirit of generosity, especially in the hard times when Uganda is in lockdown with COVID19 infections. Your support of Teach Men to Fish has enabled some of the apprentices to start small businesses and from their savings, they have been generous to others.

social distancing meeting

The apprentices were just having a social distancing meeting at their church a few hours ago chaired by their leader Mr. Muwonge Yudah. They were empathizing how to stay safe and keep surviving at the same time.

Times are really so hard for them everywhere with no resources, especially the rural people. Our continued prayers are much needed and appreciated.

I have been in touch with our apprentices and a number of them have progressively involved in small scale gardening/farming as a means of survival in these challenging times. Recently God provided them with a roofing job from a friend of mine in NC, he sent them money to buy materials and they successfully did and finished the job.

We are so proud of these young men and women for the empowerment and confidence they are gaining.

We want to give you an update of what has been happening at the maternity facility the apprentices built earlier this year.

Since our last update, the community has begun temporarily using the building despite the unfinished interior work. So far 10 babies, God’s new creations, have been delivered in this facility, and antenatal care is also being provided there. Glory to God for this community!

Updates during COVID-19

During the lockdown most them are staying with their family members and involved in small scale gardening and rearing chicken and piglets.

Most local businesses are at point of closing down, people don't have resources to start construction.

One apprentice who got a donation of $230 from the women's Christ church group is keeping chickens and running a small shop baking cakes.

Yoda Muwonge, Jessica and Ssemirembe are growing tomatoes, while Shaka, Eria, Abdullah,and a few others are involved in small renovation projects in the community. Docus, is busy sewing and she has helped the community with masks during this COVID19 time. Sylvia Kayongo is raising piglets.

Hi my dear Friends,

I am writing to give you a report of the work that has been accomplished by the apprentices since the lockdown began in March due to COVID19.

When I left the end of February, a temporary weather protection was put on the roof to protect it from the rains. Thankfully, a grant of $2000 from SAMS (Society for Anglican Missionaries and Senders) was awarded in May which eventually allowed for the purchase of the materials to finish the roof and protect the building—because of the lockdown everything was delayed for weeks. The apprentices were then able to put on the metal roof, which was completed the end of June. The terrazzo floors have been finished and the building is already being used for pre-natal counseling. The community appreciates the symbol of Christ’s love for them in having such a building to bring God’s new life into the world.

God's job well done

My dear friends, and colleagues,

I am so grateful for the almighty for these young people he has put in our hands to help make a difference in their lives. I am so thankful for full filling his promise that if we trust in him , he will always go ahead of us pursuing his great commission. I am so grateful for the confidence and integrity these young men and women have built in themselves, having come from that far when none of them could read a tape measure, blue print, reading and understanding specifications, to where they are now to breaking the ground, fabricating and putting building materials and components together to come up with a structure which is going to serve God's people especially bringing God's new creation to the world in a better healthy environment. On Thursday the 27th we has a wonderful topping prayer service lead by Rev. Nathaniel Matovu , and in his dedication of the works, he appreciated the apprentices for having faith in their hearts, and reminded us all that, in all we do we need to put God first, as he quoted from psalm 127; if the Lord does not build the house, the work of the builders is useless. Thank you father for leading us through this whole process and may the people of Naama community recognize your love for them. The locals who extended great thanks to the youth for such a great gift to them.

Among other things we have accomplished this time around are, acquisition of a sustainability program comprising of a cinder block making machine, paver making machine and a tricycle to help them moving their equipment around as they look for work.

We are so grateful for our prayer partners, and donors that have enabled this process through his will.

We asked the community to be responsible for putting on the roof and they are still in the process of mobilizing resources, however, we had to improvise temporary weather protection to keep us going as time was running out on me. The process of finishing the floors with terrazzo is on going, all the exterior and interior walls and ceilings are primed and ready to receive paint. So we are prayerful that before the end of the year we'll be able to finish the remaining work.

We are so grateful to God and thankful to the apprentices for following through with the safety precautions, for we didn't have any injuries despite the limited resources we had at hand.

Please pray for this country, there's so much political greed and people are just anxious and uncertain of the coming elections in Uganda.

Lots going on in the past days

Hi my dear friends,

A lot has been going on in the past days with our project, after using up all the Timber the local community came up with, I ended up taking up the process of buying more Timber for the ceilings and the expanded wire mesh to try to beat the remaining time I still have, however, rain is not so much on our side. So we have been engaged in weather protection to save what we have done so far while the community is still waiting for the promised roofing sheets. Something new the apprentices are learning to safeguard your product when circumstances arise.

We hope to plastering the ceilings will be done tomorrow and installation of the terrazzo floor finishes will proceed immediately. Like I mentioned earlier, we will have our topping off prayer service on 27th of this month and we are all looking forward to it.

The roof trusses are almost done, we started on the exterior undercoat painting, and the apprentices were making some pavers with their new machine. We hope for more activities over the weekend.

We are planning a Thanksgiving prayer service at the site on Feb 27th with our youth spiritual mentor Rev. Samuel Ssebaale. By then we should have gone further ahead.

Today the apprentices, Eriya ( Elijah), Jessica, Ismael and Sandra, randomly got picked to work on the half bricks installation under the window sills. They weren't quite sure what they were going to do. However, with clear instructions and a demonstration, they were just amazed, proud and confident as they stood back to look at the outcome of their efforts.

It was yet another productive day and we did some exterior decorative plastering on the corners of the building. We also roughed in plumbing in the bathroom and kitchen, and constructed the ramp to have it ready for concrete. Right now the skies are roaring and it is raining through the night.

Today was yet another day of interior plastering while we are waiting on the community to give us the roof. Not sure yet it's going to happen.

Also, I checked on one of the apprentices, Docus, in a tailoring training class in Mityana town, and she was doing good and enjoying it. Docus received a new sewing machine which was donated by Christ Church parishioners last year, so she is receiving training now so she can move on with her tailoring course.

Today we had the opportunity for the parents of the apprentices to visit our work and they were so impressed and proud of them. They commented, they couldn't believe their children could do such a quality job. They applauded and expressed their gratitude for what our organization is doing for these young men and women. After the tour, they lead us into a Thanksgiving prayer before God for his mercy and grace upon us and the apprentices.

It's such a blessing! We got started on the stem walls on the perimeter of the building up to window sill level.

We are so grateful for the cinder block machine that the apprentices used to make all these blocks which make the work go faster and neat. We will be erecting the scaffold starting tomorrow and do the interior partition walls as well.

Today was the groundbreaking ceremony and laying of the cornerstone for the new maternity facility. Most of the community gathered for the ceremony along with two women from Uganda Christian University who are also associated with SAMS. I was so grateful for the message from the priest to the youth and community about how we should relate to each other through care and sharing our concerns. They applauded the spirit the youth are showing to community especially the fellow young people, and emphasized to them to keep being exemplary and mentors to the entire community. It was pointed out that putting God first is a fundamental value to overcome hardships and achieve success in life.

Later when more people came, the groundbreaking ceremony was repeated and some pregnant women were present and appreciated the way God is using the young men and women to help them with the new facility to have better delivery environment compared to the old building. God is good.

I can call it a day of production

After a prolonged period of precipitation, we have started getting a little bit of sigh relief and today the apprentices were able to commence with the layout of their project. Despite being muddy, we will be digging the foundation trenches tomorrow , and start on the foundation walls on Monday. We anticipate to have the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday the 2nd, 2020, with a prayer service by Rev. Samuel Ssebaale the youth spiritual mentor, and we expect community participation as it is a day for antenatal care for expecting mothers. We are looking forward to that as the youth will be sharing with the community, the love of Christ. Please continue to pray for us.

SAMS Retreat

Several weeks ago I attended the SAMS (Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders) retreat and the New Wineskins conference at the Ridgecrest Conference Center near Asheville, North Carolina. This was a time of renewal, worship, prayer, and refreshment for Episcopal and Anglican missionaries from around the world. It was truly a grace-filled time.

The theme we focused on was in Psalm 13; knowing God's position in all our lamentations and knowing that God is God and has his timing in everything we pray for. I am so grateful for all the people I interacted with—for them being so interested and supportive of what we do. On the hiking trail I met 4 missionaries who have been to Mityana, and it was exciting to share the experience.

One night I volunteered to help arrange the display room for SAMS, where the missionaries exhibited their displays from the mission trips. Below you can see a photo of the poster I made for Teach Men to Fish and displayed along with the brochures and business cards at our table. The next day more guests joined us, including the newly elected Archbishop of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Stephen Kazimba from Mityana. In the first photo of this post you will see with us is Dr. Alison Barfoot who serves in the Church of Uganda.

Big Blue Machine

Now that Teach Men to Fish has worked with young people in the community of Mityana for two years, we are thinking about sustainability and what might help the apprentices make money and also help the community. We would like to purchase a machine that makes bricks and concrete blocks (see photo of the “big blue machine”). This machine is eco-friendly. It doesn’t use electricity or wood fire to process or make the bricks. Deforestation is an ongoing problem in Uganda because electricity is rarely found in rural areas. People use wood fires and charcoal for cooking, heat, and light. In the traditional way, bricks are made by baking them in a kiln, or wood-fired oven for many hours, which uses a tremendous amount of wood for the number of bricks produced. The brick-making machine we propose buying costs $5000 and will provide an income for the apprentices throughout the year. While some apprentices have been and will be hired by local construction companies when their training is over, the possibility of making and selling bricks locally will be a great benefit to the community as well as the apprentices, and will also help preserve the environment. As builders buy bricks, they will also be encouraged to hire the newly trained construction workers (graduates of the apprentice program) who made the bricks.

Missionary Bridger

In May I was invited to participate in a weekend for prospective missionaries by the Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders, or SAMS. I am very grateful to God that SAMS recently accepted me as a “Missionary Bridger.” This is a program for people who want to do missionary work for short periods of time. For me this means that I will have the support of SAMS as I go to Uganda for three months every year beginning in December to train apprentices in construction skills. Through SAMS I will be able to share the work of Teach Men to Fish with a larger audience. Because SAMS is a large organization, it has a number of permanent missionaries in Uganda.

SAMS was founded many years ago to support missionaries going primarily to South America. More recently they expanded their vision to support missionaries around the world. In September I’ll be going to a retreat with other missionaries associated with SAMS, followed by the New Wineskins Global Missions Conference in North Carolina. Please join me in celebrating these wonderful opportunities and pray for a fruitful time of learning and sharing for all at the conferences!

Next Session Plans

I am excited to tell you about the plans we have for the next session of Teach Men to Fish when I go back to Uganda the first December for three months.

This will be the third of the three month training sessions for the apprentices who began learning the basics of the construction trade in December 2017. I am very grateful that my employer, Saunders Construction in Denver, allows me to take three months off each year to go to my home area in Uganda to train young men and women in construction skills so they can get good jobs and end the cycle of poverty that makes life so difficult for so many families.

This year we will be renovating a maternity facility that is in great need of repair; and in spite of its condition, it is still being used.

The sign that was just posted near the facility informs the community about the project and invites their support. The message was translated into the local language so everyone can know what’s going on. This project will allow the apprentices to learn new skills as well as use the skills they have already learned over the past two years as they work on this tangible, meaningful contribution to the community. The estimated cost of the project is $56,000, which will mainly go for buying building materials. This will also show the community the competence of the apprentices and their willingness to work hard. Perhaps most important is having this project be a demonstration of sharing God’s love with the community, which is the foundation of Teach Men to Fish: to have the work be to the glory of God and to show His love in all they do.

Solar Lights

Not too long ago I was in my home village in Uganda where I was born and grew up. Not much has changed except for the rapid degradation of the forests which are being lost because the trees are a source of energy for both cooking and lighting as well as building materials. There is limited afforestation.

Because there is no electricity in rural areas, people walk for miles to the homes of the few individuals who have solar panels in order to charge their phones. Most kids who can afford to go to school utilize the daytime hours of light to do the family chores and school work. This makes it harder to compete with urban students who have the luxury of the electricity and can study at night, yet all students sit the same exams. Rural communities are dependent on kerosene lamps, which affect their health as they produce dangerous fumes and not very much light.

It was very fortunate that I was able to take some solar lights on this trip to Uganda, which I distributed to the individual young students in the village. They were so grateful as the lights will improve their opportunities and livelihoods. The lights were donated by a very thoughtful and generous friend in Denver. Thank you!

END OF TRAINING SESSION 2018-2019

We are almost at the end of our session and I am so thankful to God for all his blessings of what we have achieved in this short period.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

The apprentices were able to understand some basic construction terms by being exposed to practical application through the various models we constructed.
Math became the order of the day by measurements in our daily practices. It became so crucial as we squared our modules and simple estimates for materials.
When it came to safety, almost everyone has developed a safety culture and able to identify unsafe practices on a site and how to eliminate hazards before anyone is hurt. However, this is not familiar to most local builders. Hopefully they will be setting valuable examples to others in the industry.
Safe handling of both hand and electric tools, and the right tool for the job is highly emphasized for everyone.
A few, not all are getting a grip of blue print reading and the various components involved to include specifications and detailed drawings.
Masonry, concrete skills, and plaster rendering skills have been acquired, though more practice is still needed.
Carpentry has been part of our session and conducted by Mr. Pasikale, and they are learning right from the basics, making simple stools and tables and they are advancing to more simple items and applying various technical practices.
Last week 10 non-school going apprentices have been placed for further training and work as a footpath to advance in experience, and thanks to the local builders, Mr. Robert Kabengwa and Mr. Fred Luyima in Mityana local area.

CHALLENGES:

We have met challenges with the steep prices in building materials which are said to be highly taxed, however, we have gracefully been able to work within our means to balance the needs of our session.
Lack of enough space to do our practices on a large scale is a dilemma, as we are working in a limited space of the compound, for the volunteer community member, Mr. Semiti of Namukozi.
One of the challenges the apprentices face at places of placement for training is that, they are given a small amount of facilitation money which does not even cover their transportation, however, I explained and counseled them that these local builders are just helping us to get exposed and gain more experience, as they do not have any allowance for training and material wastage in their bids. So the facilitation allowance is just out of kind gesture we need to embrace for now.

MOVING FOWARD:

In future we will need to donate some fund in the youth organization account with Centenary Bank, where the members can borrow and use it for transportation to look for jobs, and repay it back, as soon as they start getting paid so others can also use it in the future.
The apprentices suggested to start a soccer team if we can help them with soccer balls next time around, so they can still enjoy their youthful time after work.
As burnt clay bricks are becoming a little bit pricey, we may look into the option of buying a manual cinder block making machine, which cuts down the prices of buying bricks , that use a lot of trees to burn them yet man is destroying the environment.
In the future we will invest in community service around town like we did at the Namukozi church, so people can see more these young people at work which in the long run will create more publicity for the and hence sell the for employment.

Teach Men to Fish

Part of last week and this week have been quite busy for the apprentices. We continued with blue print reading and specifications, and practiced lay out and construction of wooden stairs using a framing square, and they were able to make a small model to illustrate their skills.

Much of this week, they were engaged in voluntary work for their main Namukozi cathedral, where the youth group had to demonstrate their skills to improve the entrance to the vestry of the church by paving it.

They were so excited and so proud to collectively work on their own church, and the work itself is going to stay a landmark on their hearts.

Teach Men to Fish was behind the support of this noble cause by providing all the materials and transportation. The work was well done and everyone was so appreciative and proud of their youth group and challenged other young people in the community with their positive image.

As some of school goers are getting ready for back to school, nine of those who are not are going will be employed with further skill acquisition. Details will be next week after all arrangements are outlined.

January's Update from Patrick

Here is another update from Patrick that describes the activities and progress the apprentices have been making in their construction course in Uganda during January.

Dec. 31: Happy New Year to all! We ended 2018 today with safety training about ergonomics. We practiced proper lifting techniques and everyone did well. The apprentices also learned a lot about ladders, including styles, material types, ratings, and proper use. We were able to build a “job-built” ladder and everyone participated.

Jan. 3: It was such an exciting day for apprentices! They learned to set tripods and a builder’s level. Getting to use more advanced equipment is a great opportunity for them and reminds them of how much they are learning and progressing.

Jan. 9: We had a field trip yesterday to a new building site which is about 6 miles from where we hold classes. It’s a brand new four story building still at foundation and excavation, which conveniently fits our training program. It was a wonderful experience for the apprentices who were so anxious and excited to ask so many interesting questions. The site manager was very enthusiastic to counsel them about what the business is about. He pointed out that it’s hard work. It requires curiosity to learn all the time through mistakes. He pointed out to them a saying which translates in English to “One fall for a baby doesn’t prevent him from getting up to learn to walk.” He also stressed to them about honesty and integrity in all their endeavors because that’s what is going to sell them to the next job.

Jan. 18: It was such a beautiful morning here at St. Andrews, Church of Uganda. The sermon was so touching and encouraged us to be a sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. We were encouraged not to conform to the patterns of what is going on in the world, but be transformed by renewing our minds and behaviors by the Grace of God. In Romans 12:9, emphasis was directed to living a humble life of service to God through the gifts that are given to us by his Grace.

Jan. 21: We are working on blueprint reading and how to set reinforced concrete stairs. This morning I am picking up some lumber so the apprentices get to know how the stairs are laid out, formed, poured and finished. It will be a good experience.

Jan. 25: We continued to go over blueprint reading, specifications, and layout of the concrete stairs. Not everyone was on board at the beginning, but we were able to determine the main factors of laying out stairs, and formwork for the reinforced stairs. Participation was exciting but everyone was just wondering how we would come up with stairs out of the formwork and couldn’t see that until we poured them.

Update from Patrick Lutalo in Uganda

Patrick left for Uganda in early December to mentor and teach young people construction skills. This update provides a glimpse into the work that Patrick and the apprentices (20 young people from the Anglican Diocese of Mityana) have been doing since he arrived back in Uganda. The apprentices/students completed the first three month training during Patrick’s visit last year and have come back for the concluding three months of training. The following excerpts from his emails, along with photos, show some of their activities and accomplishments so far.

Dec. 7: “---I met with the volunteer trainers and discussed our curriculum and ultimate goals of the program. They were so optimistic and appreciative of what we are doing for the youth and willing to participate in sharing their skills with the young people. Next week we will work on the room that is going to house our workshop which needs installation of 2 doors and a window, plaster rendering the walls, concrete finishing the floor, and later installation of work platform for tools. All these activities will be done by the apprentices.”

Dec. 17: “---We are doing well, and reusing our resources wisely because the materials are a little bit costly due to the taxes imposed on them. At our sessions we’re focusing on Matthew 25:14-30 and the theme is how to multiply our God-given gifts or talents to share them with others, so together we can lift up ourselves by putting God first. These young people are so grateful and make our sacrifice worthy.”

Dec. 19: “---This morning we practiced brick laying around the new sign that was created by a local craftsman. There is a mama goat in the background.” (The next day half bricks were installed for a more finished, professional look.)

Dec. 21: “---We had the official opening of the workshop with a prayer by the Rev. William Kizito from the main Namukozi-Mityana cathedral. We were also visited by the Mityana development officer for youth affairs. She encouraged the apprentices to be a beacon to turn around the image of young people which is having a negative reputation countrywide. Both the Reverend and the community development officer urged them to stand strong on their faith backgrounds and that’s how God will continue to guide and bless them. During the service one of the apprentices was presented with an envelope of $50 given by Christ Church members who wanted to give the money they received during the distribution of the money envelopes to be a blessing to the world. Also, two sewing machines (donations from Christ Church members) were given out to two young ladies. We are so grateful for the entire church community for their generosity in helping us with funds for the shipments and the purchase of the materials we are using.

Any financial support is gratefully accepted as Patrick continues the process of teaching and mentoring students who most often have not had the privilege of attending school beyond primary education because parents cannot afford school fees (school is not free in Uganda). Patrick is providing free, hands-on training that will lead to broader opportunities for the apprentices as well as opportunities for those of us who might want to join him in this ministry of providing hope and a future to these young people.
